History/Overview
Land Rover's Discovery, often called the Disco, is the fifth generation of the luxury off-roader that started as a more affordable Land Rover in 1989. Back then it competed globally with off-roaders that were never sold here, but it was larger inside than the Range Rover and had more seats. The current model debuted in 2017, and has much sleeker styling and a more crossover-like appearance than the upright rugged models that came before. It still has plenty of off-road capability, however.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2021, the Land Rover Discovery drops both of the engines available last year, the diesel and supercharged V6. In their places are a 296 hp 2.0L turbo-four and a 355 hp 3.0L turbo-six with 48V mild hybrid system. The styling is refreshed front and rear, and Land Rover's latest infotainment system is fitted.
Available Trims
The Discovery is available in S trim or as the more sporting R-Dynamic in S with the 2.0L four and S and HSE with the six. All get all-wheel drive standard.
Standard Features
S comes with LED headlights, sliding front moonroof and fixed rear glass, power tailgate, keyless entry, air suspension, and 20-inch alloys. Inside it has two-zone climate control, 13-way heated front seats, leather trim, power-fold second-row seas, 12.3-inch digital dash, 11.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 3D surround-view camera, and adaptive dynamics. Driver assistance includes emergency braking, lane-keeping, parking aids, and traffic sign recognition.
R-Dynamic adds dark grey wheels and black grille as well as balck exterior trim. R-Dynamic S is otherwise equipped like the standard S. HSE adds premium LED lights with power wash, gesture tailgate, leather wheel, 20-way heated and ventilated front seats, power third row, adaptive cruise, and 14-speaker Meridian audio.
Key Options
Third-row seating is optional. S offers a Hot Climate package with four-zone climate control, console cooler, and PM2.5 air filter.
Fuel economy
Land Rover has not published fuel economy for the 2021 Discovery
Competition
The Discovery competes with the likes of the Audi Q7, BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Lincoln Navigator. It also sees the likes of the Infiniti QX80, upmarket trims of GMC Yukon, but offers a more refined experience than the truck-like latter two.
